Imaishi joined Gainax as an In-Between during the production of Neon Genesis Evangelion and began as a Key Animator on the series' Video Format Version Staff (#23), later working on both episodes of The End of Evangelion. Although it is not known exactly which cuts he animated, he made some promotional illustrations for the series where he already showed his style heavily inspired by Yoshinori Kanada.

He did various jobs as an animator outside of Gainax, but rose to prominence in the industry thanks to his work on Kare Kano, where he did Key Animation, Storyboarding, and served as Animation Director on various episodes, as well as heavily supervising episode #19.

Imaishi is a great 2D animator and one of the greatest exponents of the Kanada School (Along with Akira Amemiya and Yoshimichi Kameda) and the Neo-Kanada style (Along with Sushio and You Yoshinari).
His style is more than a minimalist version of Yoshinori Kanada's style, as it combines the different elements of the styles that Kanada had throughout his career that had not been combined before, completely renewing the Kanada style.
Frenzied pose-to-pose animation, lots of angles and perspectives play, plus lots of expressiveness and great effects.

Imaishi no longer focuses on work as an animator, as he saw You Yoshinari as the perfect action animator and not being able to compete with that, he decided to focus on directing. Since he is a big fan of Yoshinari, he and Kazuya Tsurumaki are the only Directors/Animation Directors who can fully exploit Yoshinari's abilities.

What is Sakuga?
Sakuga (作画) literally means drawing.
It is not something specific like "super spectacular animation", but the term is used to define a well animated sequence and that's it, good animation.
Animation is fundamentally movement, so a sequence with good movement is already good animation / sakuga, the effects and uses of cinematography are only added to the base.
