"[W]e recommend that voters replace District 4 incumbent Susan Valliere with Mr. Fielding, a commercial real estate broker with a master's degree in management from MIT. Businesses interested in Martin County's long-term future should want a commissioner committed to keeping the county's growth plan intact, Mr. Fielding argues, because constant changes for favored landowners kill predictability.
Commissioner Valliere campaigned for reelection four years ago as a managed-growth candidate. Once in office, though, she backed changes that would invite costlier western development. We remain persuaded that Commissioner Valliere and her husband illegally mingled the activities of campaign organizations in 2006, when the late release of finance reports concealed the fact that many donations came from developers.
