Traction alopecia is a type of hair loss when you wear your hair too tightly over long periods of time. Eventually, your hair follicles will become damaged, resulting in permanent hair loss.
If you are struggling with traction alopecia, you are not alone. We commonly see this type of hair loss in our office amongst our female African American patients. With hair transplants, traction alopecia is treatable, but we recommend taking preventative measures:
- avoid tight hairstyles like tights ponytails or buns, cornrows
- avoid hair extensions or weaves
- switch up your hairstyles often to avoid repeated tension in the same place
- opt for looser hairstyles that don't tug on the hair
- avoid applying excess heat to the hair
Hair transplants do offer a permanent solution to hair loss, however it does not stop future hair loss. Hair transplants simply try to replace lost hair and many times the amount transplanted is lower than the amount of loss. The ideal female patient has limited loss, won't continue to lose more hair in the future, and has nice donor hair.
