Overlooking the dramatic coastline of Cape Zanpa and Yomitan village in Okinawa Japan. The Zakimi castle ruins are well worth a visit.

Built in 1420 by general Gosamaru, The unique curved architecture was considered to be some of the most sophisticated stonework on all of Okinawa. While the castle itself is long gone, the strong stone walls remain.

Zakimi castle ruins were named a world heritage site in November of 2000, after it’s reconstruction post world war 2 to ensure it’s preservation for future generations.

The castle grounds are surrounded with park lands and pine forests, combining this with the sounds of wildlife and cool breezes the castle is a very relaxing place to visit.

Located in the middle of Okinawa’s main island, Zakimi castle was built to safeguard the souther Kingdom of Chuzan from the northern kingdom, Hokuzan, during a period of near-constant civil war known as the Sanzan era. Making Zakimi castle a vital strategic part of Okinawan history.

The castle also contains the oldest arched gate in Okinawa, featuring a keystone to improve the stability of the structure. Zakimi Castle was constructed using several innovative masonry techniques. Nunozumi is a technique of stacking large cubical stones in even layers to create a wall. Also , aikatazumi is a technique of stacking stones which have been processed to interlock when piled atop one another, to form a smooth stable wall. The fact that the castle walls have endured to this day is a testament to Gosamaru’s building techniques.

The Zakimi-jo Site is located on a hill approximately 125 meters above sea level.When the weather is clear, the view from the castle wall extends as far as Shurijo Castle in Naha. It is also a great place to watch the sunset.
