A little history of WildBlue and Exede Internet
Exede Internet is a new, high-speed satellite Internet service brought to you by ViaSat, Inc., a provider of satellite communications services based in Carlsbad, California. ViaSat also provides and owns the WildBlue satellite Internet service, which was originally an independent satellite internet provider and has been serving customers since 2005. WildBlue was acquired by ViaSat in December, 2009. While many WildBlue subscribers have upgraded to Exede, WildBlue still has a great many users around the country. Here’s a look at some of the history behind ViaSat, WildBlue and Exede:
WildBlue’s first satellite launched in 2004. The next year, the Company began delivering Internet services to people in the rural U.S. who had no access to faster forms of Internet connectivity. The original WildBlue service offered up to 1.5 Mbps download speeds – about 30 times faster than dial-up service – and was greeted with enthusiasm.
Over the next five years, WildBlue experienced record growth. To meet the pace of the demand for satellite Internet service, the Company launched a second satellite and leased space on a third. However, the Company couldn’t keep pace with the demand for service and with the need for faster speeds. It was time for the next step in WildBlue’s evolution.
------ A timely merger of satellite service providers ------
ViaSat is a company that produces innovative satellite and other digital communication products that enable fast, secure, and efficient communications to any location for commercial and government markets. In fact, ViaSat supplied some of the technology for the original WildBlue service provider.
WildBlue-dishWhile WildBlue was selling the first generation of satellite Internet service, ViaSat had embarked on an ambitious satellite Internet project of its own. In January 2008, the Company announced it was building the world’s highest capacity communications satellite, which would launch in 2011 and offer a whole new class of Internet service with much faster speeds. It was a visionary project destined to revolutionize the satellite Internet market.
At that time, ViaSat had almost everything it needed: world-class technology, a talented team of engineers, a satellite under construction and a plan for a revolutionary ground network. What it needed was the support structure for selling and supporting a residential Internet service … in other words, all the capabilities WildBlue already had. It was a natural fit. In December 2009, ViaSat acquired WildBlue including its customers, satellites and operational expertise.

Launch of ViaSat-1 and the new Exede Internet service
In October 2011, ViaSat successfully launched its new satellite, ViaSat-1, into orbit. It announced its new services at CES in January 2012, wowing technology reporters with live demonstrations of the service, which was named Exede Internet, to differentiate it from the original WildBlue service. Orbiting 22,500 miles above the Equator, ViaSat-1 remains the most powerful communications satellite in the world.
Both WildBlue and Exede Internet services are delivered by the same team of people. In fact, a number of the original WildBlue employees remain with the Company, including WildBlue co-founder Tom Moore. And the Chairman and CEO of ViaSat is still Mark Dankberg, the founder of the Company.
