Hi Everyone!

My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about Galliprant. Galliprant is a none steroidal anti-inflammatory drug for dogs that have arthritis, osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease.

As dogs get older, their joints can develop degenerative changes that cause inflammation and can be really painful. For a very long time, veterinarians have been prescribing NSAIDs to help manage arthritic pain in dogs long term.

The hard thing is that these medications block the cox 2 pathway. This can lead to stomach and intestinal upset or ulcers. Also a dog can develop kidney disease or damage from long term cox 2 NSAID therapy. The liver is also required to metabolize these medications. The cox 2 NSAIDs to help a lot with the dog's inflammation and arthritic pains, but at what cost.

Galliprant is an None Steroidal Anti-inflammitory medication too, but it does not block the cox-2 pathway. Galliprant blocks a receptor called EP4 that is part the the prostaglandin pathway to inflammation and pain. By blocking this pathway and acting as an antagonist, there is less inflammation and pain.

This make Galliprant an exciting NSAID to use for veterinarians, because it can be softer for older dogs needing an NSAID long term. Galliprant is meant to be prescribed long term for dogs with chronic inflammation and pain.

Always talk with you veterinarian before staring any medications. Galliprant can cause adverse side effects like any medication, so always talk with your veterinarian before starting the medication and while your dog is on the medication.
