Shortwave number stations are often introduced with digital tones and electronic melodies that are alien to the ears but several of these stations played music or songs average radio listeners might have been able to easily identify. Folk, traditional, classical and pop music have been used as interval signals before the alleged coded messages were broadcast to a specific audience - spies operating overseas particularly in an enemy territory. These are some of the following that have been observed and identified.
