Stella works as a care worker in the Crediton area. Her work involves a great deal of driving although, she tells us, care workers who work in a town often walk from one client to another.
A radiographer for many years, she decided she wanted to do less stressful work that would fit in with sewing, which she has now successfully developed into something more than a hobby.
Of personal care, she says “It varies from making a cup of tea or a meal and giving medication to creaming legs and giving a shower – and washing places they can’t reach.”
“There are some things clients ask me to do that they wouldn’t ask a family member to do because they’re embarrassed, such as toileting. They prefer someone who’s just that little distance away. It’s such a privilege to be able to do that for somebody and that they feel that can ask you to do some really personal stuff.”
