WD MyCloud seemed like a good idea at the time. To be able to backup my files through my home network and then access them anywhere else in the world through the internet sounds awesome.
A security flaw in MyCloud can allow hackers access to your data from the outside too. But worse than that, a firmware update rendered the whole thing useless (can’t see it on the network) or intermittent (it might work for a while and then play hide and seek).
The only option seems to be a direct connection to the computer but through a dedicated network cable.
Fret not, if you can break the WD HDD free from it’s case, it’s a simple matter to wrap it in an external enclosure. Older enclosures like this may only let you access up to 2TB. Newer enclosures like the one I got from Amazon can access much much more - 4TB is not a problem.
I did not have to retrieve any data off the drive. I just reformat the thing and put it all in one HUGE partition.
