'농촌 절반이 노인'…지난해 농가 고령인구 비율 46.6%

Before the 1970s, Korea's population was overwhelmingly rural.
But over the past 50 years, as Koreans moved to the cities, data show the number of people living on farms has declined by almost 85 percent.
This is according to data Statistics Korea, showing the population living on farms last year accounted for just two-point-two million people.
Of those, 47 percent were 65 years old or older... compared to just five percent in 1970.
The government is encouraging people to take up rural life again.
Last year, 11-and-a-half thousand people went back to farming, an increase of 12 percent compared to 2013.
But this increase was mostly people in their 60s or older.
