Original NBC Broadcast with Curt Gowdy, Monte Moore and Tony Kubek from Oakland Alameda Coliseum and Includes the debut of NBC's 'The Baseball World of Joe Garagiola' with pre game highlights and an interview with Hank Aaron and a look back over the 1973 season..starting pitchers in Game 1 of MLB's 70th World Series left-hander Jon Matlack for New York vs right hander Ken Holtzman for Oakland and starting in CF for the Mets is 'the say hey kid' Willie Mays who gets the first hit in the 1973 World Series, and in the A's 3rd inning an error by Felix Millan allowing the A's to set up and score 2 runs (1 unearned) to take the 2-1 lead as Ken Holtzman goes 5 innings giving up 1 run on 4 Met hits including a hard hit triple by Felix Millan the Top of the 5th but the Mets fail to score in the inning and Dick Williams brings in Rollie Fingers who manages to keep the Mets scoreless in his 3.1 innings pitched giving up 3 hits while striking out 3 as left hander Darold Knowles comes in the 9th innings and earns his first save of the series (1) as Ken Holtzman gets the first win (1-0) while Jon Matlack goes 6 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 A's hits while striking out 3 and walking 2 suffers the loss (1-0)
