How To Change YouTube Subtitle Language

In this quick tech how to video, I’m going to show you how to change the closed caption or subtitle language displayed on your YouTube app.

Before we begin, not all languages will be available on all videos. If they’ve been transcoded, then the option will appear. Ted Talks are a perfect example of YouTube videos that have multiple languages available, so we’ll use them as an example.

This was also found inside of the Settings menu on the YouTube app, but this is where I’ve been able to find it since an update that removed it from there.

Start on a video you want to change the subtitle language on.

By tapping the CC, or closed captions button, we will see the subtitles turn on. Mine here are defaulted on English. To change it to another language, tap the three dots on the top right of the video.

Next, choose Captions. Here you’ll find all the available languages. I’ll select Spanish for instance, and now when I start the video, my captions are now in Spanish.

And if I want to turn them off altogether, just tap the closed captions button again at the top.

And that’s how you change the YouTube closed caption subtitle language.
