Steven Bochco worked at Universal where he wrote for 'McMillan and Wife', 'Columbo', and the like. But when he moved to MTM he was given the freedom to create a show of his own, and it turned out to be 'Hill Street Blues' (1981). Each episode opened with a roll call, viewers saw both the professional and personal lives of the officers, and it had a serialized component with some story threads continuing over multiple episodes. The show ran for seven seasons; it only made the top 25 for one, but was a critical smash and would garner nearly 100 Emmy nominations. There were format changes in season seven and three different time slots; the show dropped to #42 and with Tranvanti calling it quits the series ended. The theme is by Mike Post, and made it to #10 in the Billboard charts.
