80s Radio Hits on Vinyl Records (Part 3)

The 1980s marked the end of an era for radio. For most people on the planet, radio stations had been their main source of music since the 1930s. However early in the decade this began to change with the launch of music video channels such as MTV as well as heavier use of popular music in mainstream movies and TV shows. In addition, the introduction of Walkman style portable cassette players and the popularity of the mixtape changed the way humans listened to music. The ability to choose songs as opposed to waiting for them to come on the radio was a major cultural shift the effects of which are still seen today in the prevalence of custom playlists on streaming platforms. Even with all the above factors being true, radio program directors in the 80s fought hard to keep their medium relevant. This is the reason why there was such a massive number of songs that received radio play during this decade spanning many genres. In this episode, we explore pop radio that leaned more toward New Wave and Alternative Rock. These styles which were considered fringe at their inception in the 70s found their way onto the mainstream airwaves by the 80s.
