If "Jack" and "Bob" stations play "everything", what is this station playing Everything + ..everything?

Clear Channel's WMVX-FM Mix 106.5 (Cleveland) has, surprisingly nixed its Mix (Hot AC) format for...whatever you call the format that is now on 106.5 FM in Cleveland.

Truth of the matter is that it isn't a format, obviously. 106.5 is stunting, but it's not exactly your garden variety stunt. 106.5 isn't stunting with a certain format to transition into something similar. WMVX-FM is playing a very eclectic mix of music from many genres.

"ClassicRockCountryTop40PolkaAmericanaPatrioticUrbanActiveRock"...and a few other formats.

106.5's website has been replaced with a countdown clock that says "Cleveland Radio Changes for the Better In..." + the link to 106.5's stream. A Facebook post did, however, suggest that 106.5 FM is "not changing", but simply "having fun".

Whatever it is, it's the true meaning of "We play everything" that Bob and Jack FM stations love to build their stations off of. Variety Hits stations of all names use this brand to attract listeners of all genres and age groups, even though most of them are Classic/Alternative Rock stations in disguise with some Pop and CHR tossed in.

The stunt caught everyone by surprise, not just because of the "anything and everything" musical delivery, but of the fact that they could change formats in the first place. Mix was one of 3 stations in the Cleveland area along with WDOK 102.1 (AC) and 95.5 The Fish (Contemporary Christian) that played Christmas music during the recently completed holiday season. DOK probably dominated the Xmas ratings in C-Town. After Santa was done delivering gifts, Mix played their normal Hot AC format for one day before going to this eclectic musical mix.

If this format change does entirely take place, it'll be at a time where Mix was leading the Modern AC battle in Northeast Ohio against Q-104. Mix was at a 4.4 while Q was a 4.1 in the recent November book. Q's cume was a little higher, though.

They certainly won't give clues on a new format unless Radio-Insight's Net Gnomes get wind of another domain registry. The only 106.5 that they've received so far is 1065TheLake.com which re-directed to the website of KOSY "Today's 106.5" in Salt Lake City. That could be the blueprint for Cleveland's new station at 106.5. Today's in SLC played Xmas during the holidays just like Mix did. A "Lake" branding would also make sense for any C-Town station since they're right along the shore of Lake Erie. That could hint at a rebranded Hot AC, Variety Hits, Adult Contemporary, or even Gen-X. Clear Channel already launched one Gen-X station recently when KSDD 100.3 The Sound in St. Louis changed to 90's Top 40.

Variety Hits, though, in Cleveland makes no sense. I mention this since there's a 94.5 The Lake in Milwaukee with an Adult Hits format. This market already has 4 Rock stations and doesn't need a 5th. Someone suggested a WTAM simulcast on 106.5. TAM doesn't need an FM simulcast since the Cleveland News/Talker already has high enough ratings on 1100 AM on a blowtorch signal. WTAM is 3rd in the Cleveland ratings behind Classic Hits "Majic" and WDOK.

Gen-X and Urban AC make sense. A sports talker may also be on the way since Clear Channel has contracts with all 3 major Cleveland teams.

Someone even created a Twitter account tracking 106.5's song play list. @crap1065plays. LOL.

Your Opinion...? See ya in 2011!
