How to divide and transplant your overgrown potted running bamboo!

Over time, bamboo will fill out the pot it's planted in. When this happens, the bamboo will not have room to send up new shoots, and the existing growth will thin out and yellow. When bamboo is root-bound, it won't receive the necessary water and nutrients.

Root-bound running bamboo can escape easily. Instead of letting it escape and grow into your neighbor's yard, divide and transplant it to give it space.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the best time to divide bamboo is in the first quarter of the year, when it is dormant. Never divide the bamboo when it's shooting. Always water it in after dividing, and keep it in a sheltered environment until it establishes.

The bamboo featured here is Pleioblastus linearis.
