Bipolar Disorder (Types 1 and 2) are both chronic mood disorders involving manic (or hypomanic) episodes often times occurring with episodes of major depression. There are a variety of risk factors for Bipolar disorder, including genetics/family history, and advanced paternal age. Symptoms include an abnormally elevated (or irritable) mood along with a variety of other symptoms including distractibility, flight of ideas and grandiosity. We also discuss similarities and differences between Type 1 and 2 Bipolar disorders, and ways to treat both manic and depressive episodes in Bipolar disorder.
