Very good sound quality for a relatively inexpensive pair of open headphones. 1st, sound quality is subjective so this is purely my opinion which I am sure will differ from others. 1) Comfort and Fit - I find these to be the most comfortable headphones I have or have had (I own or have owned, HD598 sr/se, HE-400i, WS1100is, ATH-AD900x, MDR-XB950ap, HFI-780, JBL Slate S500, PS Platinum, Focal Spirit One S (felt like a torture device) and a number of IEMs). For the people that have found them uncomfortable, I don't know why they have an issue and I don't, all I know is these are super light weight and super comfortable. These are the ones I forget I'm wearing. The wing system works great for me, I have no issues, they stay where I put them, unless I'm chewing on some food, then they seem to move around a bit. Otherwise comfort and fit is wonderful. 2) Sound Quality - a) Bass - wonderfully full for being open. I have the AD900x as well and I recently purchased them, thinking they had to be better than the 500x, but I was wrong. The 900x are more detailed but severely lack bass, the 500x wins hands down. The 500x is less detailed than the 900x, so it depends on what you are chasing as the 900x are great, but at different things. For what I use them for, I need some bass. I also had the Senn HD598 and I just did not like what they had to offer, they were boring. I got rid of those and, again in my opinion, the 500x is a much better sounding headphone than the 598, from top to bottom. b) Detail - these are detailed enough without any harshness. Again, not as detailed as the 900x and not as much as my 400i, but a very well-rounded sound with incredible openness. 3) Driveability - no amp needed, I think an old transistor radio could drive these if given the chance. When I have amped them, there is very little difference, so if you have an amp fine, but you surely don't need to buy one.
I have used these for late night TV/movies when my wife and son have gone to bed and I don't want to wake anyone but have the volume where I want it. I have used these for music (mostly Spotify) and also for gaming, but no FPS. They are just great for me. I often find myself reaching for these over my 400i, even though I do find the 400i is better in every way in SQ, but less so in comfort. I do find the 400i very comfortable, but these are just that much more comfortable and light - and don't require an amp which the 400i do in order to get them to their potential. If I do not amp the 400i, they are still better than the 500x, but only marginally so. What may be a fit for me (sound and actual fitment) may work for you or it may not, but I would say these are definitely worth a try, especially considering the cost, they might just surprise you. And again, I find the bass very pleasing and adequate in these, much more so than the 900x (and I assume the 700x). These have the bass you want the HD598 and 900x to have. Oh yeah, the cord, the only fault I have found with them, but not worth taking a star off. I deal with it.

If you're looking for the best Gaming headphones... this is IT!
GAMING/SOUND: These Headphones Appealed to me because of there performance in First person shooters. It's almost an unfair advantage using the headphones, i can hear foot steps unbelievably clearly and from pretty ridiculous distances with insane accuracy. The Open back design puts you on the battlefield, you have to experience it to understand, the first time i used these it felt completely immersed. These headphones are technically reference or monitoring headphones, so they have a very flat sound stage, no booming bass, no fluff, not something particularly great for music. It's emphasis is on treble, which is why foot steps are so clear. AND THE BEST PART!! THEY'RE ONLY $100!BUILD QUALITY: When i first unboxed these headphones, i was a little worried. They felt almost fake, they had a cheap feeling to them. Compared to my Astro A40's i was replacing, they were light, and UGLY. They feel cheap because they are meant to be EXTREMELY LIGHT on your head for maximum comfort ( which OMG are they!!!) If you have tendency to throw your headset in a fit of GAMER RAGE, then you need to get over that shit before you buy these. I'm not sure how much punishment these headphones could take. They have minimum swivel so the only good way to store them is to hang them up or set them on a headphone rest.COMFORT: THEY ARE COMFY!!! I could literally where these cans all day. They are extremely light, the headband design puts minimum pressure on the top of my head. The Wing design is really smart, and an awesome design for comfort. The Ear cups are very large and sit nicely AROUND my ears. With that being said, i did upgrade the earpads to Brainwavz memory foam pads for $23.50. The pads that come with it are a little thin.ADDTIONAL GEAR: Although these headphones are great by them selves, if you are going to be gaming with them you'll need a microphone. I suggest getting a modmic (they are around $50) I personally am using a Blue Yeti. These headphones DO NOT need to be powered with an AMP, however i decided a little more performance wouldn't be a terrible thing, so i purchased the FiiO E10K (around $75) these will give the headphones a nice little boost in sound.THE COMPETITION: Turtle Beach, Astro, Tritton, Logitech, Steelseries. STOP BUYING GAMING HEADSETS. For $150 (ATH ad700x and a modmic) you could beat every top of the line gaming headset that sits in the $300-$400 range. gaming headsets unfortunately are a gimmick, they too often sacrifice quality for aesthetics. There are so many reasons not to buy a "gaming headset" SO just dont do it.CONCLUSION: There is no better option. This will give you and Edge on the battle field unlike any "gaming headset." You can play all day with no discomfort with one easy upgrade to the ear pads. I've owned these cans for about a year now. These are and probably forever will be my favorite headphones.
