The Oakland neighborhood, of which the Doty House is now a part, was originally part of Daniel Doty's lands. Daniel donated a portion for use as the Middletown Cemetery. At one time James Grimes ( 8 ) also lived in this area. By 1895 the area had been platted from lands which had been more recently owned by Stephen Curtis and Lorenzo Dow Doty. The principal subdivisions were the Oglesby and Barnitze tract, the Curtis addition, and Oakland Place.

Oakland was an area for the average City dweller to live in. Places of employment were an easy bike ride away.

Some standardizing of construction had begun and several houses were build from the same plan, perhaps with exterior differences, just as they are today. Additions, interior changes, and wall treatments have changes appearances over the years. It is interesting to note the gable decoration at 616, 618, and 620 Baltimore shows on the cover. If you look closely, you can see this design and similar ones in the other locations in Middletown.
