What keeps an engine from running as smoothly as possible? Vibration. With the horizontal design of the Subaru BOXER engine, the side to side punches of corresponding pistons cancel out each other's vibrations. That translates into a smooth running engine. When you look at an inline design engine, the vibrations aren't naturally cancelled out. The same thing happens with a v-type engine. You can see there's no counter-punch to cancel the vibrations. Rather than eliminate them, many engines add extra components to address the issue. More components, more potential maintenance costs. That's why every vehicle we make comes with the Subaru BOXER engine.
