So, we got that Japan was quite an anchoretic country. Friendly communication with foreigners till the middle of the 19th century was not their cup of tea, for sure.
Not to put too fine a point on it - they were not even much of a friend with their Asian neighbors. To be more exact - they were unfailingly at war with some of their neighbors as early as from the 7th century. And if it was not neighbors, they felt free to make war against each other. One day a clan came at a clan, the other day shoguns were bored. Well, this kind of a restless nature they had. But from the middle of the 17th century, they did not hold any particular warfares.
They called to mind their habit to fight someone at war even in the middle of the 19th century. Umph, in the middle of the 19th century? Just when they started to open to the foreign world... Quite an interesting coincidence...
