In this video, we will show you how to air layer a Japanese maple tree so you can create multiple trees out of one tree! We will exclusively use Sphagnum moss to wrap around the air layered area in this video.

Air layering is a technique to remove a part of bark and have the tree grow roots from there so you can cut the part of the tree off from the parent tree and make it a separate ‘child’ tree that keeps the same genetics.

The best time to do air layering is April - early June when the leaves are hardening/have hardeded off. During this time, the tree is creating lots of sugar and sending it down to the roots. By cutting the bark and a thin layer called Phloem, this technique will force the tree to create roots where the nutrient flow is interrupted.

Depending on the species, trees might root in the next 3-4 months or may take longer.
