For this video, we tried to exclude most of the footage that we used in the original edit and include everything we left out the first time like extended scenes, behind the scenes, and never before seen clips of other surfers charging in this Big Wave surf contest. However, there are still some gems in this edit, some of which we did not discover until now since we were rushing to edit and put out the first video one day after the Big Wave event before 9pm that Monday.
This follow up video to our The 2023 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational edit is not meant to match the action of our original video, "Surfing Massive Waves Waimea Bay (Jan 22, 2023)," which is more of a 15 minute highlight video than anything else. Instead, we made this second edit to show some of our unused footage that's been sitting on a hard drive until now. We feel that it's necessary to show all that we have to recount and document that historical day in Hawaiian Surf History from January 22, 2023 at Waimea Bay.
We also document behind the scenes footage regarding the experience of what it was like to run into one problem after another such as not having a good place to film the event from regardless of arriving the evening before the event, forgetting to turn on image stabilization while exploring the chaotic crowd without a gimbal making the footage unusable, having issues filming with the camera and setting up the tripod properly, dealing with severe heat and humidity and dehydration, having the waves run up the beach threatening to ruin our camera equipment, having people continuously stand up in front of the cameras field of view during key moments, kind of documenting a fight that broke out among tensions in the crowd, issues with limited parking, realizing that my partner filmer never showed up and I was all on my own to get footage, losing 3 hours of footage searching for a better spot to shoot from, and most important... being divinely led by Akua (God) to be in the right place at the right time to get the right shots which helped to make our first edit go viral! That is a testimony all in itself! Too long to go through it all but one example is how I blindly went to seek out another spot to film and when I finally found one in one of the most crowded densest areas with human bodies, another filmer had just left allowing me to occupy a prime spot to setup my stuff and film from.
