Start up of a 6-cylinder submarine diesel engine from 1917. The MAN S6V35 engine is driving an AC generator, which is connected to an adjustable water resistor as load. The engine has 430 hp at 375 rpm (reduced speed to match the AC generator frequency). In the submarines, it was running a little bit faster at ~550 hp.

The submarine engine MAN S6V35 was used in these Type UB III submarines:

UB-48 to UB-53
UB-60 to UB-72
UB-75 to UB-79
UB-88 to UB-99
UB-103 to UB-117

An improved version of this engine was used in the Type VII submarines during WWII.

The engine is operated and maintained by Museum SHVP in Rotterdam: https://shvp.nl/
