Dark Gable Presents: M.A.N.T.I.S.

As promised in my Juneteenth video, I'm reviving an old column I used to write called DARK GABLE PRESENTS...here as a new video series on the channel. It's an opportunity to highlight unsung and underappreciated pieces of black cinema for audiences that care about that sort of thing.

For our first installment, I've chosen a bit of an unorthodox choice, revisiting the short-lived 1994 Fox television series M.A.N.T.I.S. created by Sam Raimi and Sam Hamm, starring Carl Lumbly as a wheelchair bound black scientist who fights crime using an advanced exoskeleton that allows him to walk. The original TV movie pilot was so ahead of its time and one of the most radical pieces of '90s black pop culture, but for some reason, the main series itself isn't as well remembered.

So, let's dig into why.
