Meiji Shrine is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful must-visits in Tokyo. In contrast to the nearby energetic Takeshita street in Harajuku, this shrine is surprisingly quiet and oh-so-peaceful...

Officially founded in 1920, dedicated to the souls of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, Meiji Shrine (or Meiji Jingu 明治神宮 in Japanese) will mark its 100 years this November 1, 2020.

This Shinto shrine is an ideal place to experience some of the most amazing Japanese traditions like weddings, or seven-five-three ceremonies where the Japanese families bring their children (boys at 5, girls at 3 and 7 years old) to the shrine and pray for their health.

To get to this uniquely outstanding shrine, you can either
(1) take the famous Tokyo-go-round Yamanote Line, get off at Harajuku station, and get out at the Omotesando exit,
or (2) take the Chiyoda subway, and get off at Meiji-Jingu-Mae (Harajuku) station
