Esto se hace cuando es demasiado costoso o inviable rodar al personaje en el escenario deseado, o para evitar el laborioso recorte del personaje fotograma a fotograma (rotoscopia).
Ningún elemento de la escena debe ser del mismo color del fondo (pues sería eliminado de la imagen), y en vestuario, peluquería, etc. se deben evitar los bordes poco definidos, ya que será más difícil ajustar el croma.
