The Montreal Royals were a minor league baseball team that existed from 1897-1917 and from 1928 -1960. Beginning in 1928, the Royals played their home games at Delorimier Stadium, which was located at 2101 Ontario Street East, at the corner of De Lorimier Avenue.
In 1939, the Royals began an affiliation with the Brooklyn Dodgers and in 1946, they became the Dodgers' AAA farm team, the highest level of minor league baseball. That same year, the Dodgers signed Jackie Robinson to a contract and assigned him to play for the Royals. With Robinson's help, the Royals won the Junior World Series. The following season, Robinson became the first black player since Moses Fleetwood Walker in 1884 to play major league baseball, as he suited up for the Brooklyn Dodgers and went on to a Hall of Fame career.
The plaque in the video is located at the former site of Delorimier Stadium. The following is a translation of what is written on the plaque:
This commemorative plaque honours Jackie Robinson's time with the Royals team and marks the old location of Delorimier Stadium. With the Royals, Jackie Robinson became the first player of colour to play in the professional leagues. Jackie Robinson bequeathed his glory to those he represented and to all of baseball and merited an important place among the immortals of this sport.
In the minds of Montrealers, Jackie Robinson will always be a symbol of excellence, courage and perseverance.
