Conditions for Hutu prisoners in Rwandan jails continue to
deteriorate. The prison in Gitarama, designed to hold 400 inmates,
now holds 7000. Disease is rife and the conditions are so cramped that many prisoners have had feet amputated after spending long periods standing.
