Screws, fixings, nuts, and bolts are very often the weakest link in an assembly. If they break it can mean anything from a mild inconvenience to a major recall or even a catastrophic mass casualty event.

One shocking example, which didn’t kill anyone, fortunately, took place in 2013, when 32 huge bolts sheared on the new San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge and led to its collapse.

This example has many lessons to teach us, so let’s dive into them and some other great bits of advice for when you are designing your fixings.
