How to Install a new Bathtub Overflow Plate Assembly

Is your bathtub overflow plate leaking, or are you ready to install a new bathtub overflow plate? In this video we show you how to remove the old rusty bathtub overflow plate/tub vent from your tub and replace it with a new bathtub overflow plate in your bathroom remodeling.

Overflow plate bathtub
First order of business in your bathtub overflow repair is you to buy the overflow plate assembly kit from your local hardware store, and it often comes with a new tub drain that you can install while you complete your new overflow plate installation. I prefer to buy the entire bathtub overflow plate assembly with the new tub drain at the same time in the same kit.
Overflow plate assembly usually comes with an overflow plate gasket
If your tub overflow cover plate assembly comes with a black overflow plate gasket, and if you can fit it behind the overflow assembly plumbing and between the bathtub at the opening, then you could change out this gasket for the new one.
Overflow plate installation
The old overflow plate in bathtub needs to be removed, and these older bathtub vent covers are secured on by 2 screws. So unscrew the 2 screws from the tub vent cover, and save these 2 screws for the new tub overflow cover plate. Open the new overflow plate assembly kit. Screw on the new bathtub overflow plate adapter bar with the 2 screws.

Next, we are ready to attach the tub overflow plate over the bathtub overflow drain opening with only the single screw into the center of the bathtub overflow plate adapter bar.

To prevent tub overflow plate leaking, we suggest a bead of clear silicone caulk around the top of the bathtub vent cover but leave the bottom open to drain out any water that might end up behind the bathtub overflow plate. Make sure to clean off all excess silicone from the bathtub vent cover.
