Home movie footage shot in Japan, presumably in the early 70s.
I obtained this footage in a collection that I bought online. It included reels shot elsewhere which I will upload at a later point.
I’ve telecine’d the footage using a Wolverine scanner (not fantastic quality but probably the best for my budget!) and edited together the all the relevant footage into one travelogue. The film has been left silent as was shot so feel free to listen to any music you wish whilst watching. The reels didn’t have an apparent order to them so I’ve tried the best I could to edit them together logically by titles and locations.
I have a huge love for Japan so I was excited to see where this footage would take us. We see Tokyo and Hiroshima and some other places that I can’t identify. Most of the reels did have titles written on them, which I have included below in [brackets]. I’m not sure what ‘Hashi’ is referring to and struggle to find Eba Port. Tsuneishi appears to be a shipping company and so I’ve concluded it refers to the yellow vessel which the later footage is shot from. Edit: Hashi appears to be Hashi-cho in Goutsu-shi. Hashi beach appears at 11:20. (thanks @yoshikawamichiya7781 !)
I’m not 100% sure when this was shot. We see a Shinkansen sitting at one of the stations which were introduced in 1964 so it is definitely no earlier than that. Perhaps by the advertising and shops seen in the Tokyo section we can work it out? Going by when the lines opened it is estimated this was shot between 1972-74 (Thanks @yoshikawamichiya7781) also the Honda Civic which came out in the 70s (thanks @67datsun)
It is also unknown who shot this footage, perhaps someone working on the ship at the end?
