In Haydn's time, the scherzo replaced the slower minuet as the third movement of sonatas, symphonies and quartets. Beethoven is generally credited with introducing the scherzo as a symphonic movement. During the Romantic period, scherzos (scherzi) were often written as independent pieces. Chopin's scherzos are among his finest achievements. They are completely different in form and character from the scherzos of earlier composers (Beethoven's, for example), which were in three parts, with a fairly exact recapitulation of the first part after what was called a trio. Chopin's compositions, in their freedom of form, are more like ballads or rhapsodies. But unlike most scherzos, they are neither playful nor pleasant, but intensely dramatic, the very language of passion in all its forms.

Adam Harasiewicz studied with Zbigniew Drzewiecki at the Krakow State Music School (1950-1956). He won the 1955 Fryderyk Chopin International Competition in Warsaw, and was awarded the Harriet Cohen Foundation Medal for his achievements as a pianist (1957) and the Gold Medal of the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Foundation in New York (1960). Following his triumph at the Chopin Competition, he embarked on a career as a virtuoso, performing with outstanding conductors and orchestras in the most prestigious concert halls, including a tour of Japan, a gala concert at the Brussels World Fair (1958) and the inauguration of Chopin Year at the United Nations (1960). His discography is largely dominated by the works of Chopin.
