During World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army committed numerous war crimes across the Asia-Pacific region. These atrocities included mass killings, torture, forced labor, sexual violence, and mistreatment of prisoners of war and civilians.
The Nanjing Massacre in 1937 stands out as one of the most infamous incidents, where Japanese troops brutally slaughtered hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and prisoners of war in Nanjing (formerly Nanking), raping women and girls, and looting and destroying property.
The Japanese military's use of chemical and biological weapons, notably in Unit 731, resulted in widespread suffering and death among civilians and prisoners of war. These experiments included vivisection, germ warfare, and testing of biological weapons on human subjects.
Japanese forces also systematically enslaved and sexually exploited "comfort women," primarily from Korea, China, and other occupied territories. These women were subjected to rape, forced prostitution, and other forms of sexual abuse.
After the war, the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal prosecuted Japanese military and political leaders for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. However, many atrocities remain unacknowledged or denied by some in Japan, leading to ongoing tensions with neighbouring countries affected by Japanese aggression during the war.
