Task

In a Xella competition, students were asked to design an archive to house previous documenta exhibitions, that also had other functions, such as a library and an exhibition space. The space had to allow assets to be collected and also exhibited. The location was set next to the Friedrichsplatz in Kassel, home of the exhibition documenta of modern and contemporary art.

Concept

The draft focuses on the concept of a vertical dynamic: as if they were driven by an invisible force, the monoliths are pushed upwards. The resulting stelae extrude and intrude from the ground kept in place by the underlying grid based on the surrounding area.
The concept for the archive, protector of the memories of the City Kassel, is mimicked from the human mind, which is protected by our skull. Further, the memories of documenta’s past are accessible, but still protected from external influences by the massive walls. The documenta treasures, especially the archives, are protected in a vault-like building. The visitor has to enter through the walls to experience the memories of documenta.
