On Thursday the United States vetoed an attempt to grant full United Nations membership to the Palestinian state. The resolution had wide support from many other members, with 12 in favor and 3 against.
The resolution would have suggested the full General Assembly approve Palestine, who would become the 194th full member of the UN. 140 other countries have already recognized the state of Palestine, essentially guaranteeing the resolution would have passed had the United States not vetoed the resolution.
The decision comes as the war in Gaza has increased worldwide focus on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.
