Since its independence in 1948, Myanmar has struggled to create a national identity and put down rebellions by ethnic armies. Many military experts consider Myanmar’s internal conflict to be the longest-running civil war in the world. The latest one involves fighting between a coalition of ethnic groups and the ruling junta. The rebel groups are said to hold an edge and control up to 60% of Myanmar’s total territory.
