I started my recruiting agency, filling any and all positions that came my way. These included mostly generalized labor, but eventually the time comes when one may want to "niche". If you don't know what niching is, first off, don't start a recruiting agency until you do. Also secondly, don't niche for a while...

Niching is when you begin strictly recruiting for a certain industry or market, such as technology, finance, accounting, sales, legal, the list goes on and on. Some people simply start off recruiting in a niche and don't ever leave it, it's all they do and they are just fine doing so.

Others, like myself, recruit in the general labor space for anything and everything and have not dialed down into a specific industry or niche as of yet. I say as of yet, because I do intend on specializing in a particular field eventually. Right now I have enough client flow that sustains a really good high volume business model in general labor and that makes me happy.

So now that we've covered the basics, let's discuss WHEN to niche down in recruiting. This is done by testing yourself on a few items and only you can truly know these, so be honest with yourself.

1. Are you good at recruiting? Do you genuinely find clients and make placements on a regular basis. Not just do you think you're good but can you produce and do it sustainably? If the answer is no, you need to wait.

2. The second question to ask yourself is are you successful pivoting into different markets? ie: have you moved from different job type to different job type and been successful placing in each market the same as the last. Have you placed an admin, then a manager? Can you work on a warehouse role while filling a mid level manager role? Check yourself, is this something you've done? Be realistic about it.

3. How long have you been recruiting overall? If you haven't been in the game successfully for longer than 6 months to a year, it's not time and you shouldn't be doing it yet, period.

HOW TO NICHE - Now that we're past the phase of IF you are ready to niche, let's talk about how you do it. Surprise, it's pretty easy! So, chances are you've been looking at niching down for a while and looking into the industry of your choice for a while.

Here's how to successfully execute the transition into a niche market.

1. Find out what "works", what's paying the bills and what's successful for you.

2. Find out what works THE BEST. There's lots of niche markets that "work" and can work for you but what really vibes with you, what feels right and what would you consider THE BEST for you?

3. Find out what's fastest. What's the quickest close niche, from job order to placement, hopefully this aligns with what's "best" for you and you're all good. All of this is to your benefit.

4. DIG IN! Join all the groups, clubs, associations, meet-ups, networking events that you can related to your niche and go as deep as possible. Meet every possible decision maker, assistant, VP, Director in that market that you can. Build a name for yourself in this market. You want to be the "GO TO" for this market, you want people to know you. Write LinkedIn articles about your field of recruitment, build a database of all the people you know in the niche so you have a nice book of contacts for whatever reason you may need them.

After doing all of this, you my friend..are niched in. Stay there and be successful!
