Cool Uncle Mods: Replacing the PS2 Slim Laser & Troubleshooting Steps

The Playstation 2 Slim is almost two decades old now, but it still has the top spot for most sold, and for good reason. Sadly, the test of time is a hard one and many lasers are going bad. So I'm going to show you how to replace the laser, and take you through some further steps if you're still having trouble. Stick around to see how things turned out for my PS2!

Note: When purchasing a new laser, make sure it is for the same model PS2 Slim you have. You can find the model number on the back of the unit.

UPDATE: Wonderful Nerdphew, Ben, offered to take a look at the console and it turned out to be a combination of corrosion and whatever lubricant I mentioned having found on the board having been used in excess and spreading all over it. He has to replace the whole board with another one. Sorry if it's anti-climactic, I too was hoping there was that one little thing I was missing, but it's a good reminder - Just because you buy something refurbished doesn't mean it's been refurbished WELL.
