New Zealand's acting high commissioner to Tonga, Peter Lund said on Tuesday that Tonga was facing “a whole new challenge” with the cleanup following the aftermath of an underwater volcanic eruption and subsequent tsunami. All the homes on one of Tonga's small outer islands have been destroyed with three people confirmed dead.

Meanwhile, experts remain baffled by what caused the eruption and subsequent tsunami that spread across the Pacific in a matter of hours, with an atmospheric shockwave detected around the world.

The Pacific island has been isolated from the rest of the world after the tsunami completely cut off phone and internet lines.

"There is also issues understanding what exactly triggered that tsunami because that tsunami reached very far shores in North America and Japan and caused significant damage there. So a simple model of a tsunami being generated by an explosion at, say Hunga volcano, and then dissipating its energy as it kind of travels upwards as it's usually understood to happen, doesn't work. So there must be some additional processes that helped this tsunami kind of keep it's energy as it was migrating across the ocean," said Marco Brenna, a geologist at the University of Otago in New Zealand.
