およそ500年前、江戸の開祖といわれる太田道灌（おおた どうかん）は、現在の静勝寺境内（赤羽西1-21-17）に稲付城を築き、江戸北方防備の要としました。文武両道に秀でた武将で、管弦楽などの遊びを地元民にも普及させたといわれています。赤羽馬鹿祭りは、道灌の偉業を讃え、「赤羽の地にも住民の祭りを」という思いから、地元の商店主達によって1956年（昭和31年）4月1日に「第1回赤羽馬鹿祭り」が開催されました。「赤羽馬鹿祭り」という名称は、開催日だった4月1日の「エイプリルフール」にちなんだとされています。エイプリルフールは、欧米発祥の「4月1日に罪のない嘘をついても許される」とされている風習で、もともと日本ではエイプリル（ = 4月）フール（ = 馬鹿）を直訳して「四月馬鹿」と呼ばれていたためです。その後、「馬鹿」という言葉の持つ負のイメージに配慮し、「大赤羽祭」と改称されましたが、2012年に原点回帰として再び名称が「赤羽馬鹿祭り」に戻りました。音楽隊によるマーチング演奏からはじまり、馬鹿踊り、仮装、御輿行列と様々なパレード隊が行進し盛り上げる赤羽馬鹿祭りは、春の北区赤羽を華やかに盛り上げて、毎年数十万人の来場者が訪れる北区最大級のイベントとなっています。

The Akabane Baka Festival was held on April 1, 1956, by local shopkeepers, in honor of Dokan's great achievements and with the desire to ``hold a festival for the residents of Akabane.''
