In the lead up to the 1993 NBA All-Star Game, NBC's Bob Costas sat alongside former Los Angeles Lakers megastar Magic Johnson for a two-on-one interview with Orlando Magic rookie sensation Shaquille O'Neal. Despite a vague sense of consternation from New York Knicks center Patrick Ewing, O'Neal was named the starter of the Eastern Conference All-Stars after eclipsing Ewing in All-Star voting by more than 250,000 votes.
Finishing the season with averages of 23.4 points, 13.9 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks, O'Neal was a near unanimous selection for Rookie of the Year, earning 98 of 100 possible points (Alonzo Mourning earned the other two).
