Located on the green slopes of Mount Penteli, on the outskirts of Athens, Greece, lies the "Dionysos Residence." The project developed by Desypri&Misiaris Architecture aims to respond to modern lifestyle while evoking the sense of protection and familiarity of a primitive "cave refuge."

The inspiration for the design process comes from the archetype of the primitive shelter, deeply rooted in human history and linked to the concept of "dwelling," influencing spatial preferences over generations and highlighting our lasting ancestral connection to the idea of home.

This architectural rhetoric finds expression through a defined, tectonic, and Doric geometric ensemble—a cohesive architectural composition characterized by its enigmatic simplicity. The suspended monolithic volume, crafted from exposed concrete, serves as the primary synthetic gesture. The prismatic shell encloses the residence's private spaces, with meticulously designed aluminum panels allowing controlled interactions with the external environment.

The use of stone and exposed concrete has allowed the creation of a monolithic volume that, earthy and timeless, with the roughness of its texture, holds deep symbolic meaning. On the ground level, communal spaces are organized in direct connection with the exterior. The two contradictory qualities of space are united by an atrium that functions as an intermediary space.

The terrain orientation and the alignment of the residence along the east-west axis allow natural light to shape and mold the spatial experience. As time progresses, from hour to hour and season to season, the ever-changing natural light continuously transforms the space, illuminating different facets of the architectural composition.

At night, under insufficient lighting, the monolithic volume blends into the sky, protectively framing the life it shelters. Fire elements and warm lighting enhance the earthy warmth of the dwelling. It is hoped that residents, living and gathering in their contemporary refuge, will repeatedly discover, with a touch of surprise, the preciousness of simple things.
