A recent article examined the state of the Catholic Church in Ireland. Noting that many of the 26 dioceses established in the 12th century are being merged. Writing in the Irish Times, Patsy McGarry said in part, "Driven by a declining number of clergy, declining attendances at Masses and other liturgies, an increase in civil marriages, and declining income generally, necessity has become the mother of invention where a restructuring of Catholic Ireland is concerned." Author of the piece, Patsy McGarry, joins to tell us more about the current state of the Catholic Church in Ireland. He discusses how the faithful and Church leaders are responding to this restructuring and these frankly quite scary numbers. McGarry explains whether there are any signs that things will improve or any sign of hope for the Catholic Church in Ireland. He fills us in on how strong the Church was in Ireland during its heyday.
