手話のスピード

5/25に投稿させていただいた動画のように修正、編集で変化が激しい時にシャドーイングしていきます。
シャドーイングとは手話（音声）を見た（聞いた）後、即座に復唱することです。
翻訳者である矢野が出張でいない時、寺澤が代わりに矢野をシャドーイングするのですが矢野の手話はゆっくりめなため、寺澤がシャドーイングするのに苦労しました。
では逆の場合どうでしょう。
矢野は手話が早い寺澤をシャドーイングするのに苦労しました。
ELANはスピード調整機能がついているため、なんとかシャドーイングできました。翻訳者だけではなく、音声言語者の話すスピードがそれぞれ違うように、ろう者の手話はそれぞれスピードが異なります。当スタッフはもちろん知っていましたが、改めて気づかされました。
Here’s an interesting thing that we want to share!
As we posted on May 25th, we use the shadowing technique to make clean copies of drafts that are too messy from having too many clips edited together.
Shadowing with sign language works the same way as with spoken language. The signer will watch the original copy and sign almost simultaneously following it (as a speaker would listen to the original audio and say the same thing almost simultaneously).
When Uiko was out of the office, Terasawa recorded the drafts by shadowing Uiko’s drafts. Uiko’s signing is slower than Terasawa’s so it was quite the challenge.
What about the other way around?
Uiko has a harder time shadowing Terasawa’s sign as well due to the difference in speed. Luckily, ELAN (the software we use) has settings to adjust the speed of draft videos, so with that we are able to make do. This is not a problem specific to translation. Just as speakers of spoken languages all naturaly speak at different paces, Deaf signers also sign at different speeds. Even though this is kind of obvious, our staff were reminded of this important aspect of the drafting process.
