Inside the first U.S. 'Picklemall' - an indoor Pickleball facility repurposing vacant mall space
The Pickleball craze in the U.S. has reached new heights, with the opening of ‘Picklemall’, an indoor sports facility inside Arizona Mills mall in Tempe, Arizona.
The facility will be open to anyone hoping to play Pickleball, but 500 memberships will also be offered to serious players hoping for extra benefits like cheaper court time and the ability to reserve a spot ahead of time.
One of the unique features of Picklemall is its scoring system. Upon entering the facility, players receive personalized clickers that allow them to keep track of their points and scoring history.
“The point thing changes, you clip these on your belt that way you never have to go back to the screen and you have the you have your scoring history in your app. When you have a great replay that you want to you want to memorialize, you go here and you hit the replay button and the replay is saved,” said West Shaw, Picklemall CEO. The replay is possible with the cameras installed on each court, allowing players to view recording of their match.
The founder behind Major League Pickleball and PickleMall, Steve Kuhn, thinks this partnership with Arizona Mills mall will bring new life to dying shopping malls. "I think shopping malls in general have to find ways to bring more people here to make it more experiential. You can't have this on Amazon. You can't have this fun ordering something on Amazon for your house,"
Kuhn said about the project which he expect will bring in more mall-goers. “Once they're here, they will check out the shops. They'll go get some food."
Pickleball is currently considered one of the fastest growing sports. “Right now we're seeing growth of 153% year over year. There's really no other sport like that in the world that is just growing so rapidly with such adamant fans of the sport," Shaw said.
