人類が自ら引き起こす環境や社会の変容が加速しているのと対照的に、遺伝子は多くの世代を経て徐々にしか変化できません。食料生産革命を契機として生じた都市化・文明化などの変化に追いつけない私達の遺伝子は、近年急速に増えてきた糖尿病、肥満などのありふれた病気の要因になっています。これらの遺伝要因は将来の世代にも伝えられることから、これらを解明し、うまく対処する智恵を得ることが求められています。
